The beginning of this novel was slower than I expected for a thriller (not my usual genre, neither is YA). I was frustrated when the two main characters hadn’t met a third of the way through the book. The story picked up toward the end.

This story is very Pretty Little Liars meets Get Out and I fear that if you aren’t a fan of both of those, you might not get through the book.

While the overall twist was quite predictable, the smaller twists and endings weren’t so it didn’t completely set me off. What did put me off a bit was the absolutely ridiculous choices the characters make…

I don’t want to write too much about this read, because I fear I would spoil something by accident, and I truly think the best way to experience this book is to go in not knowing much about the plot, so that you’re as confused as the MCs and disocvering the trurth right alongside them. The only reason I’m giving this less than five stars is because of some pacing issues. The first half could have been tightened up more, and more time needed to be spent on the climax. There was also an aspect of one MC that felt a bit shoehorned in and underdeveloped. But other than that, this was a truly phenomenal read, both insightful and harrowing. There were so many layers to the plot and characters that Àbíké-Íyímídé artfully constructed and peeled back for the reader. I can see why everyone raves about this work, and I’m really looking forward to reading Àbíké-Íyímídé’s 2024 release.

The tension was great! Ending felt a little lack luster.

I am beginning to understand the true depth of racism. The book gave me a lot of insight and made me realize how afraid I have been on the topic of racism. Every page gave me knowledge. Read this book!

Update: It has been a couple of months since I read it and I can tell all of you reading this review, hand to the heart, it is constantly in the back of my head. I have started my own journey towards becoming an anti-racist, and this book is one of the many reasons why.

This book starts off with a quote from gossip girl and get out and that’s what it is- gossip girl meets get out. Two teens, Chiamaka and Devon who could not be more different other than being the only two black students in their prestigious private high school are targeted by “aces” a gossip girl like texter. From there a mystery unfolds.
I totally see why this book has meant so much to so many people. I love that the two main characters were so different and from such different economic backgrounds- it brought depth to the story and highlighted the intersection of race and class.
I found the end a little rushed but the most interesting parts of this story are it’s dissection of race, class, homophobia and the cleaver allegorical qualities. I also really enjoyed the authors personal note at the end on why she wrote it.
