A rollicking adventure with luridly colorful prose - not my sort of thing at all. I'd heard these characters praised for years, but wasn't able to get into the short story collection I'd tried years ago, so gave this Neil Gaiman-approved audiobook a try. It lingered on my Ipod for months, but eventually I was able to force myself to finish it thanks to the excellent narrator and the vivid writing style.

It was a painfully long slog. The sea voyage described in the first part was eerie and kept my interest for a while, but the rat invasion of Lankhmar just went on and on. The female characters were either malicious and cunning, or downtrodden slaves (aside from the ghoul) - not that the men were particularly interesting. I found Fafhrd and the Mouser unappealing and their banter tiresome. The only character I liked was the kitten.

No more sword and sorcery for me. It was like reading a Frazetta illustration.

I think this might have worked better as a novella.

Good prose and characterization typical of the author. Quick pacing and fun plot. The main knock against this story is that it suffers from many of the same outdated cultural attitudes that similar work of its era does, though to a lesser extent than most.
