Not even done but frankly pretty bored. I love (or at least loved) Balzac's longer novels but am underwhelmed by this one.

The opening twenty pages were of a torrent of a analysis teeming with lyrcial flourishes begging for the common book. The subsequent tale resembled many an other Balzac tale.

Truly a slog to get through. The racism and sexism throughout the novels are enough to put it down forever, and that’s before you get to the insufferable narrator. Honestly, three stars is probably too generous, but I did appreciate the timeless themes explored at the very beginning (and then never again).

The characters were often too irrational to relate to or consider creditable for me.

Girl what 😭 The way I did not understand half of this shit.. I'm sorry man the prose was enchanting but I have no clue wtf was going on. I could summarise everything I got from it in less than one line... I was 12 reading books way above my level and understanding everything and now I'm 20 reading ONE French book and I don't understand shit. Crazy.
