Maybe this book just wasn’t for me…
I could see it being a story about life and death, but the amount of paragraphs I read where by the end I was overall confused with what I had just read is too many to count.
It’s a beautiful story, maybe one that I’d have to read again to fully grasp.
I did not think there had to be that much to do with sex? It just seemed like it didn’t really fit into the plot for me? But maybe I miss understood the reasoning

Mrs. Dingles has my heart though.

This was my first book by Ms. Dimaline, and she has me hooked. This writing was like cutting and edgy and poetic and just so incredibly raw and real. It felt so authentic to the rough-as-hell years of middle and high school. And the exploring of the sexuality and the fascination with dark things. I loved it all. I highly recommend this one.

I'm so surprised I even picked this book, and even more surprised that I enjoyed it so much.

I tend to go for lighthearted and cheesy romances, and I'm always rooting for a happy ending. So for me to pick a book that from the book description alone, I could tell it wasn't going to be my usual cheesy and happy queer romances. Instead, I was taken to a heartwrenching story filled with grief, death, and love.

This book was exactly what I expected, which is always a good thing, and while it surprised me in a few parts, it didn't surprise me enough for 5 stars. I would still love to read more from this author, as they have a way of not just words, but take off through the journey of a biracial Native girl and her loss. I also sometimes felt the characters didn't feel strong for me, especially those who weren't Phil and Winifred. I would have loved to get more depth from the supporting characters, especially the antagonistic ones like Penny. Hated her guts, but sometimes felt the way she was described harbored some internalized misogyny. Had the characters felt more real to me, this would have been a 5 stars book for sure.
