I didn’t like any of the characters and I just didn’t care about the story.

An enjoyable fantasy quest with queer love at its center. Sometimes near the end it could’ve used more editing, but the characters were wonderful!

This was an extremely cute book. I'm not sure I would necessarily categorize it as a cozy fantasy - the stakes are a bit high for that - but it is very much focused on the relationship between our two main characters so it is cozy in that sense.

Logan is such a good character - a man with so many self-esteem issues who is desperate to save his husband. Pie is also very fun - a bard with secrets of his own who is desperate to convince Logan that he deserves to be loved and that not everyone who loves him will leave him.

They are joined by the countess - a necromancer Logan once got arrested but now needs to help him rescue Pie, Ophelia - Logan's ex-wife who hurt him just as much as he hurt her, and Gary - a naive young man who wants to prove himself and be a hero.

This was tough to get through. Not because it's difficult to read, but because the writing feels so rudimentary. I saw another review saying it's like reading a DnD campaign, and I entirely agree - but to me that is not a compliment. The pacing is odd and everything is explained instead of described, but worst of all is how the male characters are sexualized and objectified, battered and belittled, and it's treated like they should "stop being such a bore", or like constantly being touched or oogled despite lacking consent is some sort of compliment?! Learning to understand the necromancer is a whole plotline that could have been interesting, but I do not find it cute or funny that she REPEATEDLY snuggles up to the main character when sleeping, despite him making it clear he is uncomfortable with that. Had that been a older man and younger woman it would have been obviously wrong, but now because he's a grumpy guy it's somehow funny? Lords. No.
