Good to read as a throw back to the 80ѓ??s. I found the story line a bit boring. Iѓ??m not a huge horse fan, which probably does not help. I thought the characters were a bit flat too.

My first Jilly Cooper and my 2nd favourite after Rivals .I didn't like Perdita much but Ricky was adorable and it made me really curious about polo!

This is for everyone who loved inventing crazy dramatic stories for their The Sims games.
I am so freaking happy I chose to trust a friend and read this because otherwise, I would have never discovered this.
I knew nothing about polo and was like "800 pages of chick-lit? Man, I guess we shall see...". Its only saving grace was being included in the audible membership, and my friend saying how obsessed she was with Ricky's and Perdita's interactions and that I would definitely enjoy the vibe.
Tell me why, less than five chapters in, I was hooked on a sport I didn't really understand and felt like I was inside the story myself? I swallowed this book in under 72 hours I guess, caving in and buying a kindle version as well so I could read in bed until four in the morning.
A few times, I was like "ah, yes, this is what's going to happen" and then it didn't happen, and then something else happened, and I was throwing my hands in the air at the curveballs of the plot. The dialogue was effervescent, the characters utterly horrible or miserable or both in the beginning, only to grow on me and become sweethearts. I was so immersed in the story that it felt like I actually knew everyone and hung out with them in Argentina, England, the USA and France (as if I could ever be remotely as rich lol).
A lot of cheating, a lot of mess, a lot of jokes and puns, and even though you can predict the ending to an extent, getting there will keep you engaged and entertained.

Very dated views on women etc. Typical Jilly: countryside romp with everyone jumping into bed with each other. My favourite of the Rutshire chronicles

This was very disappointing. I had not, in fact, read this one the first time round, and unfortunately not knowing the plot in advance didn’t make it any better. The attitudes towards women are dreadful, none of the relationships are in any way healthy, and the endless descriptions of Polo matches were just turgid. Worst of all though, is that one of the polo ponies was named Black N*****. This is totally unacceptable, even more so perhaps because the book was published as recently as the 1990s
