i love satire, i promise. but this book was so disgusting that i honestly wasn’t sure if palahniuk was being silly or dead serious.

now, this book was pretty solid.
unreliable narrator, martyrdom, sex addiction, drugs, whatever—my favorite part was when the doctor lied to him and told him he was Christ, so he went and had sex with six women and indulged in a girl’s rape fantasy. he is so grossly disgusting that he thinks he’s a good person for letting a old woman think that he raped her. what the heck.

i liked the writing, but i wish this was executed better. maybe i should’ve read “fight club” first, because i’m starting to think this author is overrated.

I understand what the author was trying to do, I just don't think the execution was quite there. The book wasn't boring per se, but I wasn't really thoroughly entertained either (for the most part). I was often reading just to finish it.

Major takeaway here:
buy quality butt plugs

What a ride! Okay so first, the content was the extremely racy and shocking - even for a dirty-minded human like myself. Once I got past that and the incorrect grammar used throughout by the main characters … the book quickly picked up the pace. By the end, the thoughts of the characters, the seemingly disparate details, and the way things are written all come together beautifully to leave you with some very deep thoughts about life, love, and loss. For those who have seen Fight Club, the style that Chuck Palahniuk used here is very similar. I look forward to reading another book of his soon!

This is one weird book. Like passing an accident,  I couldn't look away. Sex addiction,  dementia,  mental illness,  and two characters that work at a living history museum create a story that includes looking back at childhood memories.

Charles has returned to share with us his unrivaled sense of anarchic terrorism. He says some awful things in this book, but he also says some beautiful things. I can’t give him the benefit of the doubt, but I can appreciate the project as a whole being powerful nonetheless.
