i love satire, i promise. but this book was so disgusting that i honestly wasn’t sure if palahniuk was being silly or dead serious. 

now, this book was pretty solid.
unreliable narrator, martyrdom, sex addiction, drugs, whatever—my favorite part was when the doctor lied to him and told him he was Christ, so he went and had sex with six women and indulged in a girl’s rape fantasy. he is so grossly disgusting that he thinks he’s a good person for letting a old woman think that he raped her. what the heck.


 i liked the writing, but i wish this was executed better. maybe i should’ve read “fight club” first, because i’m starting to think this author is overrated.

I wanted to love this so bad. I usually love books about addiction and Chuck is one of my favorite authors so I figured this would be the perfect novel for me. I think that there was just way too much going on. It was hard for me to commit to one layer because there were so many layers. All of the twists were good and it definitely had the shock value of all Chuck novels. It was just a lot going on that didn’t really flow together in my opinion

I understand what the author was trying to do, I just don't think the execution was quite there. The book wasn't boring per se, but I wasn't really thoroughly entertained either (for the most part). I was often reading just to finish it.

I somewhat appreciate the inspiration for this book. The twists are predicatable especially if you know what fight club is.  But theres bits and pieces of incest and pedophilia in there.   Probably beastiality too.   I am also afraid of being old and did inspire me a little bit. But i cant reccomend it like r-pe play isnt good even if you are doing bc of ur trauma....its not healthy

Even though this was written 20+ years ago, it feels like it was written today. His quick wit and dark themes make this one you can’t put down as you try and see what happens to the main character and his relationships based on the WILD choices he makes to cope with his sex addiction & dying mother.
