This is a reread for me. It was good and I like that we got a lot of “epilogue” ( I know they are actual chapters but it felt like an epilogue). However this book was too long. I don’t mind reading a long book and I know it was hard for SJM to wrap up a series she spent like a decade or longer on, but we could have cut like a quarter of this. I dont really like military history, I don’t care about flanks and maneuvers, so that was a drain to read. I feel like the timeline was questionable at certain points between the separate groups.
The Wolf tribe and lost fae portaling in at the end was Avengers Endgame in a bad way and we’re supposed to believe that the cadre were carefully drawing wyrdmarks in the midst of battle and they didn’t get trampled/kicked away by other soldiers????
And why didn’t Elide say sorry???
I know she saved Lorcan’s life but she still should have said sorry for telling him she hoped he died
Lastly the
nameless thing with the King of Adarlan was stupid. He could help close the lock by being blood related to Brannon. If Dorian could do it, so could the king. We didn’t need a rigmarole about “he took my name.” It’s a cool reveal bc we didn’t realize it but it was ridiculous to the plot line

WOW! just wow!
This one made me cry more times than I can count. All the different storylines were so perfectly spread out, and I thought that they came together at just the right time(even if in my heart i wanted the couples to already have their happily ever after). It was a really long book, but it surprisingly went a lot faster than what I anticipated. Its hard to pick a favorite character because the series has so many great ones, but seeing Elide and Lorcan and the growth they went through UGH IM GONNA CRY AGAIN! I never really liked Chaol but SJM did such a great job developing everyone that I did not hate him in this book. I wish I could have seen more of Manon, but I understand she was not a MC. All in all, the series is LONG AS HELL! BUT so so worth it. I remember being skeptical at first when people recommended I read 8! books, but now being on this side, I totally understand.

One last thing to add is that Kingdom of Ash is deeply emotional—the stakes are personal, not just political. The characters' struggles feel incredibly human, despite the epic fantasy setting, and that emotional depth is what makes the book resonate long after you've finished it. The relationships—especially the friendships, loyalties, and romantic arcs—are beautifully done, and the way Maas ties them all together in the end feels satisfying and fulfilling.

If you're someone who enjoys a mix of high fantasy, intricate world-building, and deep, evolving character arcs, this book delivers it all. It’s a perfect conclusion to a series that’s taken readers on a wild ride from start to finish.

A brilliant conclusion of a modern epic worthy of every note of appreciation, gratitude, and joy. Not just for the story, the characters, but for the visible and tangible expressions of love, grief, depression, anguish, rage, and all things human.
I want to send a bouquet of flowers as thanks for the brilliant work she has graced us readers with and as acknowledgement of her understanding of grief and growth. As we read, so we hear too where she has been- and grown from. So too shall we. Thank you, Sarah.
