One of my all time favourites about the utterly de-humanizing potential of blindly following orders, which may lead to the most horrible of outcomes. A book about how personal upbringing, coupled with societal changes linked to historic events can distort and even kill the inner need and ability to question.

I really had a problem with rating this book.
I hated it, with every cell of my body, not because it was badly written but because it made me horribly uncomfortable but this is also probably the reason why I gave it 4 stars in the end. Because it made me feel this way, because the author achieved it to make me hate Rudolf like someone I knew, not just like a person you read about in a history book.

A big must read for everyone who still asks himself after all this history lessons how this horrible chapter in the history of german could happen.
