Someone here noted that we can’t rate The Analects but we can rate the edition that we have used and read. I’m not sure about that. I did enjoy this Penguin with the lengthy introduction (largely skipped) and terse footnotes (rather useful) and the concluding biographical section. The reverence of harmony and tradition are somewhat suspicious in terms of pragmatism. Inequity can be resolved through user-friendly bootstraps. I shouldn’t mock and I did appreciate the emphasis on erudition.

I wish I could've read it in Chinese, since I think reading it translated ends up making the text lack the nuances and meanings of the original - as said by the translator in the introduction of the book (as far as I remember). It's a good read anyway, and it's nice way to understand more about the thoughts of such an influential man. One thing that certainly made the reading experience a bit worse was missing the references to locales and people (such as Confucius' disciples), since they're pretty frequent throughout the book, but I guess you can understand some of them through context after a while.

Great insight and basis to examine eastern Confucian cultures but also difficult to comprehend at times
