I read these to my precocious five-year-old, who was completely enchanted (would be a great read for older kids as well). She talked about the characters and situations long after we'd put them away, which is the greatest indication she was engaged. The writing is superb, the main character lovable and funny, and I found myself enjoying the book just as much as my daughter. "Mirabel Plouffe," I'd walk around my kitchen saying over and over, laughing. The illustrations work well with the writing and would serve to keep even a younger child's attention span from wavering, if they have a difficult time sitting still for chapter books. I'm so glad I purchased such an exquisite gem!!!
