It is incredible to think Peyton Place was written in the mid '50s. How scandalous and shocking! There's a lot of drama in this little New England town! I like to imagine every sleepy town in America to have as many eccentric characters, as many problems, as many secrets. Clearly Peyton Place was set in another era, when family values were so different. The 21st century reader should question...how different were they really? Metalious was a wonderful writer. I was engaged from the start and found a new favorite book. How great is it when that happens?!

This is one of the craziest novels I've ever read. While reading, my face often was contorted in an expression of disbelief, or perhaps what the phrase "oh my god? seriously?!" would look like if it was visual. Yet I was unable to put it down. There was a lot going on, and I always wanted to know what the next shenanigan would be. Scandalous, racy, and fun, I would definitely recommend this for a summer read.

Well well, how have I managed to avoid this one all my life? I well remember the TV series, although I was too young to watch it, I heard the names of Alison and Constance MacKenzie and Rodney Harrington bandied about. I tried to imagine reading it as a Nice 1954 Housewife sitting under the dryer at the beauty parlor and how shocked I might have been, since there is nothing in it that couldn't today be on a daytime soap opera. I mean she hits all the notes, there is lots of "unmarried" sex, girls behaving "wantonly", illegal abortion, adultery, rape, alcoholism, illegitimate children, etc. etc., and of course a murder and a trial. As a novel, it was not as badly written as the Trash-of-Today like Fifty Shades, but it's still quite silly overall. Thinking of it as sort of Classic Americana Kitsch,, though, it's pretty entertaining.

Another long-time lingerer on the pile - and another book where I wish I'd got around to it earlier. I do like American sagas of this ilk - dark and brooding and with a seamy underbelly beneath respectable exteriors.
