God, this was a hard read. Reading this is such a reminder of the multiverse of realities that now exist within this country. Some hear the government say “2+2=5” and say “yes, of course. It’s always been that way.” Others hear the government say “we’re at war with Eastasia” and know that’s absolute nonsense. We are allied with Eastasia. We are “at war” with Eurasia. And watching these two realities play out is perplexing and maddening and utterly infuriating. I don’t know how to combat any of it, but by god I know we have to.

I'd rather have read the print version vs the audiobook bc the author gets a bit smug at times and it was hard to keep up with the other works she cited. Overall a worthy read. I'd recommend this for people who are not already experts in the topics (the intersections of Xtian fundamentalism, right-wing politics, misogyny, and child abuse). As a homeschooled kid in the 90s the HSLDA chapter was chilling.

Thoughtful investigation into Christian fundamentalism and how it dominates the current USA political climate. The end sections on corporal punishment and home schooling were particularly interesting.
