While this is a good introduction to mythology, I thought it could have gone further with both Greek and Norse mythology. I was especially disappointed at how little Norse mythology was in the book.

Mythology clearly isn't my thing. Some of the tales in this anthology are interesting, others are confusing. Edith Hamilton's commentary and tone throughout are really what kept me going (well, that and the fact that I have to teach this "novel")... If you like mythology, you'll probably enjoy it; if you're just trying to get into mythology, there's a lot of names and places and things to remember.

It's surprising how a book wrote in the 40s, on the subject of ancient Greek mythology, can feel so fresh and modern.
I enjoyed Hamilton's writing style and appreciated the way she introduced the sources used for each of them.
Hamilton's commentary ranges from sassy to savage and I was there for it!
Unfortunately, and I hope this is an issue with my edition only, there seems to be lack of commas, which makes reading multiple length sentences somewhat confusing.
Additionally, towards the end of the book the editiors definitely dropped the ball. Some of the myth headings are not formatted properly and one section was either misplaced or I really didn't get what it was trying to say.

Fantastic reference. The book is densely packed, but Hamilton is able to translate for a modern audience (even if it was published in 1940!). Come for the myths; stay for Hamilton’s sassy commentary.
