I only read this book because I wanted to know more about the mysterious background of the first book and I had read a review that said all would be revealed. Alas, almost nothing that I wanted to know from the first book was gleaned from this book, which annoyed me tremendously. However, I enjoyed this book more. This is partly because this book didn’t have the insufferable narrator, and partly because this story overall was more complex and interesting. I actually think this book stands alone and would be more intriguing if I hadn’t known one character’s backstory from the first book… apparently I can’t be satisfied: it’s either too much backstory or not enough. *sigh*

This is a brilliant literary thriller - a terrific story, compellingly told. It hooks you from the start with a fascinating narrative voice and it delivers its twists, turns and surprises with subtlety, riffing playfully and intelligently on gothic themes and motifs. I raced through it with a real sense of pleasure, gripped to the very last page. It's a sequel to the fantastic 'Florence and Giles' but it stands alone as a tremendous novel - one of the best things I've read in ages.

It "obvioused" that this would be glorious and it didn't disappoint! I have 'late nighted' and 'early morninged' until it was finished and now the next book I read will seem a "dullery of disappointment" in contrast!

This felt like a cheap, nasty thriller, with some shoe-horned references to The Turn of the Screw shoe-horned in and made less interesting and relevant. It began with the narrator's late-to-the-party observations of the cruelty of forced institutionnalisation and mistreatment of women in mental health facilities of the time, then took a turn which made the protagonist even less likeble/rootable. The eponymous Girl is infantilised, annoying and unbelievable, and finally turned stereotypical femme fatale. Extreme misogyny that drives the plot, setting and characters, which makes it an absolute slog to read. I didn't find anything original enough here to warrant the known, mundane unpleasantness of men exerting power over women, gaslighting them and ultimately destroying them. The ending wasn't satisfying or clever enough to outweigh that.
Graphic: Death, Misogyny, Physical abuse, Violence, Forced institutionalization, Murder, and Gaslighting

Entretenido de leer, pero el protagonista es un mendrugo de marca mayor.
