The Hangman is the third book in The Forgotten Series by Mary Burton and can be read as a stand-alone.
Julia Vargas is re-investigating The Hangman case her father was working on before committing suicide. Meanwhile Tobias Novak, a homicide detective, is investigating a crime scene in a burnt building where a woman’s body is discovered. Next to the body is a picture of Julia with her dad when she was a little girl. Julia has no idea how the picture ended at the scene of crime and how the victim was connected to her dad. Is this a copycat killer or is the old Hangman back ? When more victims connected to Julia start turning up it is a race against time.
This is a good mystery novel and I loved the characters especially Julia , who is a strong independent woman. The romance between Julia and Novak was a nice distraction and the back story of the characters were interesting. Overall a good read!
Many thanks to the publisher & NetGalley for this sample copy in exchange for my honest and fair review.

When the decades old Hangman case is rekindled with a new body, Julia is in a race to find the killer. With this case, brings back lots of memories of her father who worked on the case himself before dying and a possible new love for the hardened Julia. The was a great thriller with a satisfying ending! I thoroughly enjoyed this story, it kept me engaged and biting my nails!

I loved this book - read through it in one sitting! It was the perfect mix of mystery, suspense, and romance. Almost like reading an episode of Criminal Minds.

THIS REVIEW IS FOR BOTH THE AUDIOBOOK AND EBOOK VERSIONS
Very interesting plot, characters are easy to follow. The narrator did a wonderful job with these characters. Keeps you wondering throughout this story. I would recommend this book.

a sweet ending
I really thought I’d figure out who the killer was for this one, but that didn’t deter me from enjoying the last book of this series. It was nice to see all the characters from the series working together to solve these cases.
Something I would say is that although the killer made logical sense, I didn’t like that the particular person was the killer. In a way, I thought it would be someone closer to home for Julia. Otherwise, the full series was enjoyable, and I LOVED Novak’s persistence and personality.

A little slow
Of the three Forgotten Files books this is my least favorite. This book just seemed to be very slow, had a lot of characters, was constantly taking me down different paths and was a little slow on the romance. It was sometimes hard to keep up with the players and who’s who. The story just got over complicated if that makes sense. I will continue to read Ms Burton’s books, as of the 4 I have read, I have really enjoyed 3. This one just wasn’t for me.

The Hangman is the 3rd book in The Forgotten Series by Mary Burton. This is another excellent book in the series where she has expanded and added new characters. I like how she takes secondary or tertiary characters from a previous book and makes them the main characters in the next book. She develops their character out during the main mystery in the book. If there are future books in the series it would be great to take the main characters from 2 books and build on them working together to solve the next mystery.
