Great way to read Lovecraft. Each illustration was grotesque in a beautiful way and I felt like I could really understand the descriptions that had been written of the people, town, and artifacts. I also found the story better paced in this format than the traditional short story

Liked seeing a Manga version of Lovecraft.
Would have been a 5 star for me, but there were a few typos, which may have been due to it having been translated from Japanese. And although the art style is fantastic and very detailed and creepy AF, some of the smaller panels suffer from being too dark to make out what is being presented. Those are all minor quibbles with an otherwise well written and wonderfully drawn Manga. I loved that Gou Tanabe was able to convey so much emotion and story with just a one panel of the MC eyes.

I was really hopeful going into this graphic novel. It did nothing but fall short of my expectations. One of the great pleasures of a graphic novel is drawing contrast between words and images. While I won't write out a full Scott McCloud citation for the different ways which images and words can interact, or the different ways which time can pass between panels, I will bring up that there are ways that you can make images and words interact that isn't just illustrating the words. Especially when it comes to adaptations of print publications, I find this to be particularly important. In an adaptation, you have the grace to change things or omit things. In comics, a medium that thrives off of a fervent speed, choosing what to keep in and what to leave behind to keep up a frenetic pace is of the utmost importance. Actions were often indiscernable, due to the nature of the paneling and shading. I think especially with an author as notorious as H.P. Lovecraft, as an artist you have a responsibility to draw greater contrasts through images with the text while considering what he originally wrote with modern sensibility. Overall, I was incredibly disappointed by this and hope to never encounter it again. May other adaptations actually prove to have better character design and panel layouts than this.

What a bizarre little thing this was. Graphic novel over reading Lovecraft any day though. Enjoyed the manga style reading, although v challenging for me at first.

Good fit for folks who enjoy GNs, horror, cosmic/edlritch horror, body horror, atmospheric horror, etc. and other Lovecraftian themes but who don’t want to read Lovecraft himself.

I was disturbed by a reference early on to swaztikas used by “the deep ones” and comparison to Nazis rather than Sanskrit or something less offensive, but it is Lovecraft after all.
