this was so fun to read !!

gwen and art had this banter and the switching povs gave us some insight into both of their lives and inner thoughts! gabriel was such a cutie and he just needed some encouragement to get out of his shell.

I was a bit thrown off by the sudden plottwist but it made sense since there were hints here and there throughout the book so it wasn't completely out of nowhere.

it was sad, funny, cute and just an overall fun queer romance (generationd after king arthur but still influenced by him and his myth)

Took me some time to get into this one. It picked up toward the middle and then completely lost me at the end.
Sure the battle was foreshadowed here and there but it felt so out of place tone wise. I didn’t expect this lighthearted romcom to have character death!
I enjoyed Gwen and Bridget’s plotline the most, and wished we’d gotten more of them.

The idea is cute, but Gwen and Art are insufferable most of the time and I was given absolutely no reason to root for the two relationships because they felt so surface level. Very little plot until suddenly a lot of plot at the end.

This book is incredibly fun, addictively fast-paced, and charming in all the right ways. It doesn't push the main characters together just because they're the main characters, it doesn't have a "gotcha, they were secretly straight the whole time" twist, and it doesn't even push the main characters into relationships with their romantic interests too quickly. It lets the characters breathe, lets them figure themselves out and find their places in this politically complicated faux-medieval-England. It lets them grow on the reader, too. That said, it has rough edges where it breaks immersion and characters very occasionally contradict themselves in ways that don't make sense. It combines a fast pace, a loghtheated sense of humor, and a serious plot that doesn't hold back. It also has a very minor plot thread or two that come loose from the main story and never really get woven back in properly. Those last things do bother me, but reading this story and getting to see queer people like myself fighting for their rights even in fantasy was well worth ignoring them.

Nobody else is ever going to care as much as you do about the things you want, Gwendoline. So it’s up to you — you can put them aside forever, if you can live with that, or you can put on your big-girl girdle and demand more for yourself.

I don’t know what possessed me to request this book on NetGalley back in 2023 besides the pitch of Heartstopper meeting A Knight’s Tale. I mean, based on those two titles alone, I should love this book! I… did not.

Things I Liked —
  • Did LGBTQ+ folks exist in medieval times? Of course, only it wasn’t as open as this book makes it appear. But do we need fiction books that show characters of this group during historical time periods where they are severely underrepresented? Absolutely.
  • There was some good banter. This book wasn’t a total bore.

Things That Didn’t Work For Me —
  • I think this is a classic case of fun book/wrong reader. For whatever reason, I could not get attached to any of the characters in this book. I just did not care. That makes for a super long 400+ pages to get through. Not sure why I felt compelled to continue but I did. This is one that is easily forgettable for me.

Thank you to St. Martin’s Press, Wednesday Books, and NetGalley for an advanced reader’s copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts & opinions are my own.
