Fun, fluffy, low stakes read. I only wish that someone fluid or native in Spanish had proof read the dialogues because - no.

Oh BYE I loved this book so much, just when I thought I was going to have to give up romances for a while this book has saved and slain me all in one go. This book was so sweet, made me tear up multiple times (their families!! the ending!!), and also hot as hell. Somehow, Chencia C. Higgins managed to make a relationship that could've felt really instalove-y feel real and genuine and beautiful; I loved D'Vaughn and Kris both so much.

I enjoyed this! I thought the author did a nice job of discussing heavy topics. It was a nice change of pace reading a romance focusing on a queer, Black couple. It was absolutely fluffy and fun.

WARNING: THIS REVIEW DOES SPOIL THE ENDING!!
Likes:
Likes:
- I really like the concept cuz it’s like fake dating and that’s my favorite trope
- I like the convo. about D’Vaughn’s feelings about coming out later in life
- Love seeing the casual convos about consent cuz it just seemed like second nature to everyone
- Always love when a book has complicated family dynamics
- Dual pov
- I love Cinta so much
- I always love when the love interest is (lovingly) pushing the other out of their shell
- I honestly love that D’Vaughn is an over thinker cuz 1) I find it soo freaking relatable and 2) I haven’t read a whole lot of books that completely show what it’s like to this degree
- I love Kevin so much
Dislikes:
- Wow the chapters are long
- It’s insta-love and I need more build up for them to already have feelings and be kissing one another, (other than the fake kisses obviously)
- We seem to get more from Kris’s pov than D’Vaughn
- The pacing cuz I’m already a little over 40% of the way through and they just got through introducing each other to the families
- It’s sometimes hard to remember which pov I’m in
- D’Vaughn can be pretty immature at times (not all the time but some of the time) like when she gets mad at people for not pushing her to actually speak her mind. Like if you wanna say something just say it, stop playing games
- I don’t enjoy the kind of humor she has. It’s not objectively bad but just not what I find funny
- I just don’t think her writing style is for me, not to say that it’s bad, its just not what I typically like
- The fact that they still got a check was a little unbelievable and kinda ruined it.
- Also I would’ve liked at least one conversation about the families reactions like yay they’re happy but they must be feeling some type of way about being tricked
Random thoughts:
- I wish we had some scenes of them just being friends and getting to know one another
- This definitely should’ve been longer or the chapters should’ve been shorter, either way there needed to be more content of them actually getting to know one another to actually build up their relationship and chemistry
- I also wanna just recognize that while I do still think my critiques/dislikes are still valid I was in a terrible mood/headspace when I started reading this book
- Normally it would be a good sign that I read it so fast but I think that this time it’s just due to the LONG chapters
- 3.5 stars and at first I didn’t know if I wanted to keep it but I think I will
