The style is first person singular, the male protagonist writing for himself about his childhood and early adulthood and the people he was close to. The characters are written in depth and believable and complex. Like his novel The Cat’s Table he seems to understand how children seem to see the world compared to how they recall the same events and people when they are adults.
Mr Ondaatje’s prose is very evocative of time and place. It also reflects on memories and how people are torn between duty and desire. Reading this novel was a joy.
Graphic: Sexual content and Abandonment
Moderate: Animal cruelty, Animal death, Chronic illness, Death, Torture, Violence, Blood, Medical content, Death of parent, Gaslighting, War, and Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Gun violence, Dementia, Car accident, Murder, Pregnancy, and Alcohol
A character has epilepsy, they do have two seizures on page but it is not described how the condition affects their life. There is little diversity as far as ethnicity, orientation or gender. Dog racing is a sub-plot in the beginning of the novel, though no actual greyhounds are killed, drugging and racing are referred to.starla's review against another edition
