It started like a 3 star, but ended on 4. Much depends on how the series develops. I’d like to see more from the MMCs pov.

Fast paced follow-up to Speak of the Demon. Stacia Stark knows how to deliver a book that will hook you from start to finish. The second book in the Deals with Demons urban fantasy did not disappoint.

The romance building between Samael and Danica explodes in this book, but that doesn't mean the tension and trouble between them is resolved. These two will fight you every step of the way as they crash into each other.

Stacia does a wonderful job of balancing their relationship and non-relationship depending on the day with the story's overall plot about stolen magical artifacts and murder. She also is protecting two children who witness some harrowing events as she unravels this mystery. We also get hints at a larger plot between humans and anti-magical feelings that I believe will continue to build as the story progress.

Overall, this series is a fun one that you do not want to miss.

I loved this book, more than I was expecting too. I’m a fan of Stacia’s writing style; I LOVED her Kingdom of Lies series. However, since this was earlier work, I approached the series with a modest outlook. My gosh, I was so wrong. Book one (Speak of the Demon) was great, book two (Dance with the Demon) was even better! Early on I thought I had the ending all figured out but I was definitely off! It took such an unexpected turn and written so well. I can’t wait to start Inner Demon!

Overall this was good, it just didn’t grip me as much as the first one. I did enjoy seeing more of Danicas background and watching her grow her powers.

Main Characters:
Danica -
SpoilerA feisty, half-witch bounty-hunter and magical dud. She doesn’t know her paternal lineage assuming she is half-human dark-fae. She is estranged from her only living relative, her sister Evie, and hunting for the culprit to her mother’s mysterious murderer.

Samael -
SpoilerPossibly the most powerful demon in the states, he is in control of all the demons in the area and has a loyal following. He is building resources and plotting to overthrow the current Underking, Lucifer.

Subpar Summary:
SpoilerDanica, still fighting her attraction to Samael, is dealing with the repercussions of her bond and the stigma against her from the general population. When the footage of her attempting to save Samael during the ritual is released, it only furthers her ostracization causing her to be fired and lose her best chance at finding her mother's killer. Her powers are also temperamental to her emotions and frustration. When she finds out that Gary, a goblin contact she has a mostly amicable relationship with, sells out of a product she is desperate to get her hands on she feels betrayed by him and her powers manifest. She ends up scaring not only Gary, but his two children: Cil and Zip. She meets with Evie later on and confesses what happened. Evie encourages her to go back and apologize but when she arrives she finds Gary near death having been attacked. Before losing consciousness, he begs her to protect his sons and she puts them in Evie's care since she is going to hunt down whoever is responsible for the attack. When authorities arrive, they attempt to chain and take her into custody but, during the interrogation Samael arrives and ends it promptly. Annoyed at his interference, she tells him off as usual and he smugly lets her go. Still jobless, she decides to accept an opportunity from Miriam, a high light-fae, who wants her to find the whereabouts of 3 stolen artifacts: Thor's belt (granting it's wearer increased strength), a sword tied to the mythos of Beowolf (which would help it's owner find a sword to kill monsters), and an amulet (which would bestow knowledge to whoever touches it). Both jobs occupying her attention, Samael help still comes with a bargain and he continues to pursue her. He notices her burning a candle at both ends, and solving things in his usual fashion, he forces her to sleep and incurs her wrath. When trying to explain himself he allows her to see a vision showing how he lost his entire family to Lucifer's coup and how protecting her is important to him. She's still vexed but after seeing the memory she softens a bit to his plight. Not long after, Evie and the boys are attacked while driving. They survive without much injury thanks to wards but Danica requests that Samael allows them to stay safely hidden in his tower and he agrees with the stipulation that she attend a ball with him. At the event, she confronts the Unseelie king, believing herself to be half dark-fae, and he confirms she is not leaving her with the only other option: she is half-demon. She acts out in anger knowing that Samael has kept this knowledge from her and when they return to his tower the tension snaps and she gives into him. After their passionate night, she leaves and continues the trek for answers. One of her contacts, Cara, is able to disclose that the arrow that she found previously was made of Rowen wood and that it is fatal to Demons and outlawed as a result. Still unsure what to do with this knowledge, having now found a way to kill Samael if he ever abuses their bond, she sits on the information. Later, she and Vas end up at an auction that might lead them to one of the artifacts. Vas points out a bracelet and tells her that it belonged to Samael's mother. Knowing his history, she grabs the bracelet and they grab their suspect bringing him to the tower to interrogate. During questioning, Danica gets some information but also finds out that he has a history of sexual abuse. Her powers overcome her in her rage and she kills him despite Vas and Samael trying to calm her down. Despondent that she is losing control and fearing she will harm someone she cares about she breaks down. Samael is tender with her and gives her space. She ends up meeting with Salina in hopes of learning to train and control her abilities before they control her. She continues on the trail and a few interactions happen along the way leading her to the culprit, a paranormal-hating human named Cassie. They attack them during a meeting and are able to recover 2 of the artifacts. Danica, thinking back on her encounters with the boys, figures out that they have been hiding the final one: the amulet. When she asks them for it, she is transported to a library that forces her to open a book triggering a prophecy that a Nephilim will go to war with the Underking and only one will survive. Reading the book triggers a shockwave and now all of the demons are aware of her existence and the prophesy. She is returned to Samael and discovers he was hiding this information from her all along "for her protection". She feels betrayed at being left in the dark and doubts any of his intentions towards her as she feels he only kept her close as a tool to be used against his enemy, Lucifer. She meets with a blademaster (David) and a dark witch (Hannah) where they agree to assist her with making a weapon out of the Rowen wood for a knife to potentially kill Samael. Onto the next one...

Thoughts:
Still really enjoyed this one but I'm in this "hurry up" mode for her and Samael to work their shit out. The scenes between them are way too few and far between. Still loving all the characters and it was sweet to see her mend her relationships with Evie and Gary.

Overall: 4.5/5

The 2nd book of the series left me slightly disappointed. There was just too much repeated from the 1st book. There were also quite a bit more editing errors which pulled me out of the story at times. Overall it was a good 2nd part of the story and I'm still looking forward to the next book.

I'm still saying a level 3 on spice meter. I don't feel like there's any gratuitous sex scenes just to sate the horn dogs. In fact I'd say there could be more spice.

I really like the thriller / crime-solving core of the plot and there are lots of characters to love. It’s a super easy read with just enough threads weaving together that it keeps your attention. Still frustrated that we’re two books in and the main love interests still aren’t together but i do love the side characters constantly telling them that it’s obvious lol.
