Books featuring Iron Age celts! What more could one want?

First off I didn't enjoy the fact that Rhian's fear of having sex was miraculously cured by being in some sense forced to have sex for a religious ritual. That just didn't sit right with me. Also, the character development just wasn't there enough for me with how long the book was. As for the historical bits, those were pretty interesting.

I will consider reading the next one seeing as I bought it in the hopes that it improves.

It's an interesting story but I thought the ending was contrived and somewhat problematic. I do like the way both characters have stakes and stuff to do and cultural backgrounds, but they actually come to not just care for each other but respect each others abilities. I liked that a lot. The culture being less restrictive about (female) sexuality was cool, but maybe taken a bit too far at times.

Set in 79 AD, this book tells of the native tribes of England as they deal with the challenges of the invading Roman army. It is a pagan story and revolves primarily around two characters who make a political alliance that eventually (about the last 100 pages of a 500 page book) yields a love match. The times being what they were, sexual mores are pretty loose. This book is the first of a trilogy, but I don't especially care.

The White Mare sort of reminded me of The Light Bearer by Donna Gillespie, at least from what little I read of both. I liked the premise of each but the characters seemed too one dimensional and the constant changing POVs bothered me. Just not my thing.

This was a re-read after many years and it was very easy to get through. I wasn't devouring it like I thought I would, but Watson has a very easy writing style. This book does have a slow burn/enemies to lovers romance, but go into it for the development of the main character as that is the heart of the story. She is recovering from trauma and is learning to trust again. This character development is set against a dropback of protecting Alba (Scotland) from being invaded by the Romans. A fair bit of spiritual content, but nothing in your face.

What I liked:
* The world building and the question of whether there is magic or not.
* The politics in this is great.
* The characters are so well developed.

What I didn't like:
* The story was slow to start off and I had a little trouble getting into it initially.
