For Renee Ballard, a Los Angeles detective who works the midnight shift, being a cop is what she always dreamed of. What she didn’t count on is gender inequality, not having a home, and having to give up on cases she began investigating during her shift. That is about to change! Sacrificing sleep, time with her dog Lola, and time off, Renee keeps up the investigation about a local dancer found near dead in a parking lot. Join Ballard as she uncovers the night life of LA and get to know how tenacious she can be. The next adventure, Dark Sacred Night, featuring Renee Ballard and Harry Bosch, is waiting for you. -Dana S.

Michael Connelly introduces a new character here, Detective Renee Ballard. And she's a welcome addition to the world he has created. Renee is a ballsy woman who has had a run in with a ranking officer and been placed on the late show, the dark of night. As is always the case, Connelly has his character dealing with two cases at once, the beating of a trans woman and the execution murder of several folks. She's not supposed to be working the second case, and does off-book. Setting, dialogue, pacing, tension are all top notch.

I really liked this new character, a relatively homeless cop, what a great idea. It was a quick read also, always a good sign.

Rounding up to 4 stars, slightly slow at the beginning with a lot of police references but the last quarter of the book was fast paced and interesting.

Beginning was kind of slow but the action picked up about halfway through. Definitely enjoyed the last half more than the first half of the book.

An excellent new character and a great story to start. Very reminiscent of Bosch in attitude and story line. And that is a good thing!
