The art and character designs are super pretty, the story is cool, and the action sequences are well done. I'm intrigued by the organization, as well as the mystery behind Akira's father's death/role in the organization. Overall, I really enjoy Akira as a character - he looks perpetually exhausted or flustered, he's trying his best, and he has no clue what's happening. Sho is a good complement to him, since he's basically perfect at everything, remote and cool, and very mysterious.

Read more graphic novel reviews at www.graphiclibrary.org. Akira is mostly an average high school student who, on an outing looking for an out of stock manga, gets caught up in a skirmish that changes his life. He boards a subway and finds himself in a confrontation between an actual extra-terrestrial and the Alien Management Organization, the group tasked with making sure aliens follow the rule of law while they're on Planet Earth. One of those officers is none other than Akita's handsome and physically fit classmate, Sho Tenkubashi! Instead of wiping his memory and sending him on his way, The AMO decides to enlist Akira despite having no training and no physical prowess to match Sho. What could he possibly bring to the table? This story had some fantastically timed comedic moments mixed with great action sequences. The story was a little predictable at times but it still delivered in overall story and chemistry between Akira and Sho, so the predictability can be forgiven. Naoe was even able to provide some emotional depth to a few characters who were only on the page for a few panels, so I'm excited to see how the main characters develop over time. The illustrations were highly detailed in character design and scenery with hyper-realistic settings as well as imaginative aliens. Sara's Rating: 9/10 Suitability Level: Grades 9-12
