I hated The Wallcreeper in a proportion equal to my love of Mislaid. It is for Mislaid alone that I give the books five stars. It's so understatedly funny and moves so quickly. I finished it feeling really happy about the complexities and infinite possibilities of the world.
The narrator in The Wallcreeper felt distant; even parts of the story felt hard to hold on to. I intensely disliked her and thus, I found it hard to be sympathetic. So in the sense that she elicited strong feelings, the book was successful. But I'd happily trade the week I spent reading The Wallcreeper to have started and finished Mislaid earlier.
