This is the first book I have finished in 2022, having experiencined two unexpected bereavements at the beginning of this month, so the fact i was still able to become absorbed in the characters and maintain my concentration is compliment in itself.

I will admit that I don't think the characters are as fleshed-out as they could have been, but knowing there is another 3 novels in the same universe goes some way to explaining that.

I definitely think its Steampunk setting is its greatest selling point, this universe of mechanicals and airship travel feels entirely believable and enchanting!

2.5

This was a fun and easy read. It got a bit dark at some points which was surprising for a book that seemed less mature in other aspects. I found Lily and Robert to be likable characters, if a bit flat as people. The story was rather predictable but entertaining nonetheless, so this is a solid middle grade book. My rating of 2.5 seems harsh in hindsight for such a nice book but I didn’t find it all that spectacular. It was perfectly in the middle.
