The high level of writing is maintained throughout the second instalment of this great series. In some ways this book was even better than the first, but explaining that would spoil it for you.

kflksjklslkg SUCH an awesome follow-up to Mortal Engines, building on everything there and introducing new twists. I've hardly ever read a book that surprised me as many times as this one did. Just awesome.

This didn't quite hit as hard as it did when I was 12, which is understandable. I can forgive the drama over communication misunderstandings though. The characters are still very young and haven't had great experiences socialising so far.

The worldbuilding opens up even more here, with some interesting villains that are less cartoonish than the first book. It's a real shame there's no TV adaptation because it would work really well. The creepiness and horror of Stalker Fang still gives me the shivers.

This book is a bit of a bridge in terms of plot and character growth. It sets up the factions for the final instalments and moves Tom and Hester along into adulthood. The plot developments with their relationship are a little cheesy at the end there, but I can deal. I always liked the vast scope of this series.

Wow, that was disappointing. The whole thing was much too romantically motivated with stupid spur-of-the-moment decisions and a possessive love triangle. I have nothing against some romantic sub-plots but this just took too much presidence for me. I also disliked all the characters, good, bad, and other-wise. If I hadn't read the last two books in the series already (albeit years ago, but I do still love them, and plan to reread them), I would probably not be encouraged to continue the series from here.

I was hoping for amazing amounts of space-arctic-western badassery, but instead just got romantic pining and poor decisions. Also, why did they insist on changing Shrike's name to Grike?

It does provide vital backstory for the rest of the series though, so I wouldn't say it's a complete waste of time. But it definitely crushed all of my expectations.

I didn’t think this book could be as fun as Mortal Engines and I was very wrong. Tons of excitement and action, lots of connection and character development. It’s a ton of fun and a quick read and I can’t wait to start on the next book in the series.

While I really enjoyed reading more in this book's universe, and I found the story engaging, I did not love the character development of one of the main characters-they turn into the thing/person they initially hate. I also got tired of hearing how ugly Hester is - we get it! She's disfigured! You can stop calling her ugly now!
