I forgot that I read this book in high school and I still didn’t like it the second time.

I thought this was going to be another book where the damsel in distress is saved by a man. Instead, it ended up breaking generational cycles. I love it

I would read with caution, especially if you have ever been a victim of abuse. It was very triggering for me in a lot of ways, and it might be for other readers too. I appreciate it as a story but I needed to take some pauses because it brought up a lot of painful memories in my own life.

This would be a five star rating if not for the name choice of “Ryle.”

I can’t deny that the book was gripping and that it was easy to read, in that the style and flow is structured very nicely, but all marketing really focuses on this book being about a love triangle.
The upcoming movie, the tik toks, the ads… they all really point to this being a book with spicy twists and turns and one of love. But this book isn’t about love - it’s started out being about abuse, and it ended being about abuse. I ended up feeling more sympathetic to Ryle, THE ABUSER, than Lily in some scenes. The amount of words and phrases that just signify that Lily was breaking his heart or that he was sad or that he was traumatized, really just allow the reader to do what has been done throughout all of history - explain away the evil and lessen the impact that their words and actions have on their victims.
I also genuinely think there should be trigger warnings in the beginning and it’s crazy that their aren’t - especially when the marketing is as misleading as it is.

So this is the first Colleen Hoover book I've tried. There's so much hype around her so I was excited. But this book? Not it for me. DNF at like 20%. Things happened too fast for me, and while I like complex characters, I didn't find redeeming qualities in Ryle. Lily was okay, I met Atlas for just a second.
I also didn't love how Ryle and Lily had so much angst which was basically built up only meeting each other twice and barely talking with one another. It was entirely unrealistic to me. I want to read another Colleen in the future, but I need recommendations. We'll see if her writing is for me or not.
