Este libro es complicado, podría decirse que me gusto, pero no entendí muchas cosas. Habla sobre José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia el Karai Guasu en el idioma guaraní, el dictador supremo, después perpetuo del Paraguay, quien gobernó desde 1811 hasta 1840. Desde mi punto de vista recomendaría leer un poca de esta época y de este personaje antes de sumergirse en la obra, sería más fácil entrar en contexto.
Una de tantas cosas que dificultaron mi lectura es como está escrita, un monologo, como si estuviéramos en la mente del supremo, a veces una serie de retahílas sin coherencia y cambiando de ideas de un momento a otro. También se confunden hechos históricos ya que nos narra la vida política del dictador con visiones, fantasía y cambios incoherentes contradiciéndose en algunos momentos. Hay muchos personajes históricos, como logro mantener la independencia de Paraguay, habla hasta con el perro. A pesar de todo esto algunos momentos resultan ser divertidos, graciosos, sarcásticos, generalmente cuando habla con su secretario Patiño. El libro está lleno de ideas ocultas y reflexiones por lo que hay que leerlo lento y prestando mucha atención además está cambiando el discurso varias veces porque el dictador tiene varias voces y esta el cuaderno privado con sus anotaciones.
A pesar de que el libro me atrajo lo suficiente para no abandonarlo, fue una experiencia loca y extraña, termine con el cerebro revuelto y muy agotada, sobre todo porque siento que no logre entender el grueso de la novela, me perdía muchas veces y eso me dejo descontenta. Sin embargo, estoy muy feliz de haberlo leído, sé que aprendí sobre Paraguay y descubrí una forma diferente de literatura.

Long. Long but good. Will benefit from rereading- by the end got a little iffy. It was really interesting in some regards, Paraguay history or the nature of the written word and power. Blurring the line between fact and fiction, it’s enjoyable. It’s a book rife for analysis and criticism, but the plot is a slog.

This book is impossible to describe, incredibly dense with complex characters who defy normal structures of reality, reminded me of Conversation in the Cathedral by Vargas Llosa

I cannot rate this book. I swung like a pendulum between thinking it the best novel I've ever read, and by far the worst. Certainly the most difficult and dense, but equally the most rewarding. I'm very pleased I did read it; I was also relieved when it was over. Some parts seared themselves into my brain, others I skimmed uncomprehendingly. But by the end of it I felt that I had come to know the extraordinary, mercurial El Supremo, and I glimmered with a tiny understanding of Paraguay. These have to be worth something...

No sé si es problema mío o de la obra, pero no he podido ni siquiera llegar al primer tercio. Quizá en otra ocasión.

I couldn't really get into this book, but I totally am willing to say that's me, not the book. It was really dense- one of the blurbs compared it to Ulysses, and it was hard to stay focused. Many individual paragraphs or sections were so clever and interesting that I enjoyed reading them, but overall I struggled to stay engaged.
