This is book two of The Last Lodge on Earth and the main characters are Shelby Wu Sinclair and her daughter Maura (16), who moved from LA to San Angelo, Texas, and have taken over a small motel, called the Last Lodge on Earth, after Shelby had a psychic inkling that something really bad was about to happen. Her own husband, Simon, disappeared from his work at LifeXpand some five years ago, supposedly running off with a colleague which Shelby never believed. They have been joined by her father Sam, as well as some of the guests at the motel, Kimberly, a social media influencer and her brother Kenzie, Nick an MMA fighter. They are all shocked to find the apocalypse as started, as something has infected people making them into zombies, which are attacking others, spreading the infection throughout the country and further afield! The group are trying to defend the motel against hordes of zombies, but also have to deal with the secrets within the motel and links to her husband Simon.
Strange doors popping up at strange times, leading to portals to other places and times, but whilst they might bring a slight clue to places Simon has been, but also seem to offer additional arms and items that could be used to protect themselves against the zombies. But it also brings possible problems, as monsters are able to get out of the portals they have opened in exploring the motel. There is so much more behind this, as the company her husband worked for, has been lying about Simon’s disappearance and have something to do with the infection spreading around the world! We will have to wait and see what happens as more clues get left behind by Simon, through different lands and times in the past and future. A touch of escape room antics whenever Maura goes into another room and finds herself locked in and needing to find clues to get back out in time, or maybe be stuck there for ever! More to be discovered obviously and I look forward to finding out more. I received an ARC copy of this book form BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
