Not my fav of the series but it's still a great story. My mind had trouble keeping some of the characters names straight so I was confused a few times. But this is another James Clavell masterpiece! And I loved all the series Easter Eggs. And this book seemed to take a loooot longer to get through, but it might have just been my focus.

Give it maybe a 3.75. Solid reading, but still not the same level as the rest of Clavell's Asian Saga.

Despite the intensity and excitment of this book, I found it really hard work to get through. There were so many characters and so many tense moments it just became a bit of a blur and after about a quarter of the book I found my attention wandering more and more often and myself caring less and less, as well as getting confused about who was who and why they were there. Even now I'm not totally sure how each of the characters related to each other, if they do, and how their stories overlap, even after the book is meant to be wrapped up. I did enjoy Clavell's style of writing and found it engaging, there were just too many people.
