Would I read it again? No. But it's a solid story and the television series is something I'll be watching again. The book didn't quite give me the deep soaking sense of Berlin in the 1920's that I was hoping for but there were lots of twists and turns that took me by surprise. The underworld of a vice cop was as full of sex, drugs and alcohol as any noir story could manage.

It's been a while since I finished this one, but back then it was the first novel in a long time that angered me so much I gave it away immediately after the first read. My love for the TV series is the only reason I made it through this and the second one - the difference in quality is jarring, to say the least. The novel (the first two novels, really) has nothing of import to say about its time, presents characters that are little more than two-dimensional amalgams of cheap stereotypes and clunky writing further marred by sexism, racism and a mean-spirited undercurrent of fatphobia, of all things. How the TV series managed to turn its base material into something as profound, I shall never understand.

well-plotted thriller - also carefully sets the scene for (what I expect will be) the rest of the series.

This is the most convoluted book I’ve read for some time. Even our hero, Rath, pauses a couple of times to sum up the plot. To me what was most fascinating about it was how the book was turned it into a superb mini-series. It’s a good read, but I’m glad I watched the mini-series first.
