When I saw this was a graphic novel retelling of Jane Austen’s Emma I was immediately reserving it from the library!

I particularly like reading retellings like this because it’s so fun to work out who is who and predicting what’s going to happen especially when the story is transferred into the modern day.

I will be honest, at first I was unsure who the characters all were because there were so many sudden introductions and it wasn’t too clear. I did have to go and reread a few pages just to work out the relations between the many siblings and friends of our main character. Once I had my head around all of this though, the rest of the story flowed easily.

Emma is a very flawed character and that was obvious in the main character Evan as he takes it upon himself to help the new girl at school with her love life and ultimately gets it all wrong. Seeing the comparisons to the original characters was so fun and interesting and I think that, despite being really different, this novel managed to stick very close to the original story!

I should also mention, as always, how great the art style is! It was so easy to follow and the colour pallet was very gentle on the eyes!

Once I saw the cover for this graphic novel I knew I had to read it right away! Mismatched is a cute retelling of the classic Emma. Next to Clueless (the movie) I think this is one of my favorite visual media retellings of this story. The characters each have their own distinct vibes and personality and the plot flows really smoothly. I think the art was super cute and colorful and absolutely loved the weaving to make this classic tale LGBTQ+ friendly and focused!

As a big fan of Emma, I loved all the little nods to the original characters and plot!

Emma was never my favourite Austen, but I thought maybe a modern interpretation and a graphic novel would be the best way to explore the story in another element.

This has some great, really cute artwork, and the story is nicely executed. For me, it's a 4* because Evan was - as he's supposed to be, I think - self absorbed and whiney at times. I liked the cast of secondary, background characters more than I liked Evan, but he did have some good character growth as the story progressed, though it was minor and a little late. I'm also not a fan of the whole mix-up of falling for his sister's husband's brother, which is literally his in-law. Though they're not related, it's a little close for comfort.

I love a queer retelling and this makes me want to read Emma. There was great character development and engaging art. The colors are so vibrant.

There were a few plot gaps. I felt like some important information got weirdly skipped. Still worth the read though.
