Loved this book. A great story about Amazonian tribes, Peru and storytelling. The way the story is told is very interesting.

I liked this book, tho not as much as I love the Bad Girl. I found it somewhat predictable, but still an interesting, well-written story.

Blech. Life is too short. Alas, I was unable to link to a gold-teefed Oaktown rapper who might have expressed that idea for me more poignantly.

I started this book because I spent a few days in what would like to become in the future a machiguenga community or, at least, a community following its culture. I was recommended the book by someone there and, I have to say, it was a great recommendation. Having been in the area and met people there, I was really captivated by the tale and its characters. I wanted to know more and more.
The only issue I had was with following the hablador in the first part of the book. His way of narrating is, most likely by choice of the author, not easy to follow (but probably my imperfect Spanish didn’t help in the task).
The discussion about whatever we should try to influence native communities or not is well transmitted, always inserted in the plot and treated with the deserved respect. No answer is given, even though at the end you understand the author’s inclination.

Sparks interesting questions of cultural self-reflexivity, but it's quite predictable and thus feels as though it drags itself on and on. I enjoyed the tv programme chapters; overall underwhelimg though.

The novel is told by two distinct narrative voices, one of Llosa, a character himself, and one of the storyteller, an important function in a machiguenga tribe. The novel shows both sides regarding amazonian tribes: whether they should be integrated into our culture or left alone. Reading it was a interesting journey through the amazing myths of the machiguenga tribes. It was a good read, although not one of the best.

A work of genius, and in my opinion, the best from this author. It's not an easy read, but on the second or third read-through it yields treasures that have permanently inflected my ways of seeing the world and the people in it, of telling stories, and of finding voice. Most of my students hated it, despite my enthusiasm for it, but the brightest ones gradually realized its power.
