what’s strong in this book is the erotica. we don’t really get to know our main character outside of the bedroom.

i can see it for what it is - a book that at the time it was published probably was groundbreaking with it’s focus on women’s sexuality. but i feel like most of this book consisted of rape which were called sex.. and that made me uneasy.

I read this for a college course, called enlightenment literature in our course catalog, but called virgins and whores on the posters. Given the latter half of that second name, reading this makes sense. It is very misogynistic in its portrayal of women, but also fascinating for its portrayal of women's pleasure in a book from the eighteenth century.

I was entertained by this book. I listened to it in my own language, norwegian, and i found it mostly enjoyable. It was sometimes very funny, sometimes sad, and always very descriptive.
However, it might not be the book for you if you suffer from trauma regarding rape or other forms of sexual abuse, because in my opinion some of the descriptions are downright describing rape instead of consensual sex, at least from what would be our modern point of view (which it should have been at all times, but was not regarded as such…).
But i think it’s an interesting story and how sexuality was viewed, and i love being able to read it several hundred years later.
