A lot of the suspense of this one is merely a trick of alternating point of view and the author’s choice to explain the young woman’s backstory in reverse, starting off with the most recent events and working back from there. Eh, this is the kind of book that elicits a shruggy, “it’s okay.” Read more.

This book makes me want to move my family to the middle of Alaska with no internet and no outside influences. It scares me to my mama-core. It makes me wanna cry and scream. I was gripped from the beginning and I thought for sure I had it figured out. Boy was I wrong!

I went back and forth on how I felt about this book for a minute. It was really, really good, and surprisingly literary for a thriller, but there were some confusing moments.
The arc of Anna is one of a devastated mother, who is only trying to figure out the truth of the woman who had come to her house claiming to be her daughter who has been missing for eight years. I loved that it was told from Anna’s POV for a good portion of the book, interwoven with other important story elements. I think that’s what really made it for me.
It had a great element of surprise and fascinating twists and I really enjoyed the book as a whole, that it didn’t drop everything on you right at the end, like a lot of suspense novels tend to do. Definitely a good, quick summer read to slip into!

I loved the contrast of the two timelines used to tell this story, one moving forward in time, one back. Each chapter keeps you guessing and wondering, who is this girl? I'll just say, it's not what I thought.

I wrote an entire review that was deleted by my internet. I'm too upset to rewrite the entire thing.
Deeply disturbing read.

This book has a style that I’ve never seen before. Tricky at first, but once you catch on, it’s very interesting to follow!

A quick read, but it left me wanting more from the characters. I found myself wanting the story to go deeper into the stories and past of Anna, Julie and Jane.

I thought this was a dark and well-written thriller. I saw in the reviews people complained or were confused by the structure, but I thought it worked really well. I liked that it switched between first-person narrative of the victim and the mom's perspective. I also saw people didn't feel attachment to the characters, I feel that way about most thrillers/mysteries though - for me the pleasure is in the fast-paced narrative and suspense and not in to any sort of character development. This genre is entertainment for me, that's really it. I came across this book from a list of "unputdownable" books and overall it was. I read it in a weekend and stayed up late finishing it cuz I wanted to know what would happen - just as a good thriller should. This is far from a perfect book, but I try to consider books within the context of their genre and this was an enjoyable (though dark!) book of suspense.

Meh. Predictable and gratuitously graphic. Didn't feel connected to the characters. I've read much better thrillers.
