I wasn't sure how I'd feel about this but I was pleasantly surprised. I like both of the main characters and I like where this first book ended

One of my goals this year, was to read from genres, that I usually stay away from.  I was really surprised that this fantasy, Medusa retelling was so good.  I was really engaged in the story which kind of, shocked me.  As the protagonist was going through trauma, I totally felt her pain.  I know, that I will definitely, visit this genre again.

every time I read A Drop of Venom, my heart breaks for Manisha and other girls/women like her in the book. but the author does an amazing job depicting Manisha reclaiming her story! I love how intertwined both Indian and Greek myths are in the book and the delicious descriptions of food made my mouth water! it's refreshing to see a brown author write about powerful brown women (and how those women are misjudged heavily for protecting themselves) 🤎

A hard read that explores the concept of what is considered wrong in a male dominated society. Manisha is vilified for protecting herself from those that view her body as their due. The author highlights different forms of governance that exists within the rural towns of the kingdom. Some follow the kings model of male domination while others have a more balanced view. Despite the heavy feeling of the book, there is still a whiff of hope throughout.

Sajni Patel has written a beautiful story about the myth of Medusa. Giving the monster a tragic past that will make you question who is the true monster of this story. With amazing world building and an intricate magic system this story will keep you captivated as the slayer falls for the very monster he is commanded to destroy.

In this enchanting fusion of Medusa myth and Indian folklore, a new story is born. It's captivating with a vibrant tapestry of colors, sounds, and emotions. Indian folklore adds a rich layer to this story, infusing it with cultural nuances and deep-rooted beliefs. It celebrates the diversity of Indian mythology, showcasing mythical creatures that inhabit this magical realm. The readers are taken on a journey through the lives of Manisha and Pratyush. Each facing their own struggles and challenges.  Both characters long for a different path, away from the monsters and power struggles that plague their lives. However, fate has other plans for them.

I found myself falling in love with both these characters Pratyush's struggles and rooting for Manisha as she faced unimaginable challenges.

The theme of violation and its impact on the characters was handled sensitively, shedding light on victims. It becomes a symbol of empowerment and strength, as women rise above their past traumas and reclaim their power. It's a tale of resilience, healing power in the face of hardship, and the desire to create a better future.

It took me a minute to get into this one (which was probably more my brain than the book), but once I got in, I enjoyed it overall. It covers tough topics and can be quite heavy, but it makes sense in the context. Looking forward to book 2!
