Victory City by Salman Rushdie

All my kudos go to Salman Rushdie for writing an ancient epic (merged with magic realism) that captivated my attention all the way through. Rushdie somehow fictionalized the history of the 15th century Vijayanagara empire into a compelling, detailed, and entertaining story about a near-goddess woman named Pampa Kamapana, who lives to watch the empire grow and fold and who has great wisdom and influence over its existence.

Reading Victory City was like reading only the juiciest, most compelling parts of history - but of course with a little magic. It was FUN, while still making comments about the newly globalizing world pre-colonialism and the telling of history.

This may be the first novel I've read by Rushdie, and surprisingly, the storytelling never grabbed me. I read the whole thing, every last word. I slogged through all the unfamiliar words and proper nouns of a made up time and place (many, many, many of such difficult words). Victory City reads like an ancient text, but of course, it's not, but maybe that's the point? Long live Pampa Kampana...

I sure I'm missing something with this book and with Rushdie's work in general, so I will try again in a few years. But for this first time reading it, I must admit it quickly became a chore to pick it up again each night, and I forced myself to finish it.
