I do not understand why this wasn’t the plot of the movie, this is a way more compelling story than what ended up being the movie. There is a lot of commentary on how the trafficking of drugs really isn’t as “ethical” as it seems to many people who only experience the end user side of it all. The movie is honestly an insult to this book’s story as it creates a fantasy about the author’s pen name pseudonym and squashes any idea of critical thinking.

Absolutely nothing like the movie. Literally the only thing they kept was the name. But that being said, it was a solid “meets expectations” for a spy action novel! Lots of guns, adventure, mythology, and subterfuge to take down the evil Nazis.

My critiques are that it was too long — this plot was NOT complex enough to merit nearly 400 pages. The middle really dragged with one too many missions and became a slog. There were also too many characters in the spy team to keep track of, which cheapened the ending because I hadn’t spent enough time with any individuals to really care what happened to them in the climax.

Because of the length, I would hesitate to recommend it to anyone, but the spy tropes are well executed, so fans of the genre would probably enjoy it.

Probably wouldn’t have made it through this in paper format, as it’s definitely the kind of plot that for me is best for listening to with busy hands, but the audio narration is honestly so strange that I stopped it at one point to go do some research and try to figure out if all the mispronunciations and half accents were something the author had written in as part of the characters personalities. Apparently not—but by then I was caught up in the story and wanted to finish it.

somehow this international spy thriller is kind of boring? For me it just makes no sense that Argylle would join the CIA and the whole thing falls off from there.

Liked the ending. I came in very confused bc I thought it was similar to the movie but rather it’s the book from the movie rather than what the movie is based on. At times the pov seemed very separated from the characters as if watching them from afar rather than actually being them. So sterile at times. I got better at keeping some of the characters separate but at times I had to go back and figure who was who. Over all not bad but not my favorite thriller/spy book. But that maybe have been me coming in with different expectations of what the story way suppose to be.
