to start off with, I adore the format of this book. Some thing that challenges me with poetry is that I know that there are deeper meanings, but don't always have the context on the authors, life or experiences. However, this book does a really good job pairing memoir-like essays with the poem, so that you have the ‘right’ context to interpret the poem. I found her entertaining and fun, even if some of her points were maybe a little millennial feminist-core. My favorite poems of hers are “reducing our carbon footprint” and “like otters”

"Any white person who tells me they have no racist family members I believe must be either an orphan or a liar, or unaware of the meaning of this word"

Really good, very readable, so relatable, eye opening in so far as it points out many home truths I had never really thought about.

I wasn’t sure what to expect of this book but i really enjoyed it. The format was great with prose, short stories and poetry it was a great combination to see experiences and thoughts put into different contexts and how that translate on to the page. There were a lot of thought provoking writing in here and got me thinking about how the world is today and how it was, what has changed and what has not! This was insightful and a thought provoking read for me. Thank you Hollie Mcnish. It made me think i need to read more books like this and i don’t read enough poetry. The poetry in here was accessible and entertaining in equal measure.

I didn't see this in the bookshop because I was so sure it would be thin like a normal poetry book that my eyes just sort of skimmed past it. It's huge, and has lots of short stories and essays mixed in. Lots of good stuff. It gets a bit much at times tbh, but that's OK.

I was intending to write a more thorough and articulate review, but I think I'll just say that I love Hollie's work ♡ And if you get a chance to see her performing live, do go!
