Banks is an investigator in Yorkshire and is debating about retiring and saying goodbye to the police force. An intriguing case gets him excited about his job as a former college professor is not only found dead but in an interesting spot that complicates the murder mystery.
Another mystery that took place in England and felt very similar to ones that I have recently read and just moved way too slow for me. Because the flow wasn't there the ending wasn't as satisfying, so I may have to think twice about picking up the next one in this series.

Formulaic with unnecessary swearing. Abandoned in lieu of something better. I think if I didn't have a stack of books waiting for me, I could have finished. About 100 pages in.

Pretty decent addition to this English police procedural series. The plot was more to my liking with less thriller type action.

I found this had a bit of a slow start and with a sudden rush ending. Banks has to work on the quiet most of the time as he has been warned off from following the leads he feels are important. This changes the entire dynamic of the book. It just felt different somehow to other books in the series. Perhaps it because Banks is getting on in age and the subject of retirement is raised.
Though reading this is like catching up with old friends.

I've read many of DCI Banks books in the past and enjoyed them. This one was too full of red herrings and nonsense flimsy so called leads. I was deeply disappointed. Ending was good, no question, but didn't excuse over 200 pages of BS I could have lived without. Didn't even flesh out any stuff with Annie Cabbot or help us get to know the other members of his team on this one. Yuck. Sad.

Some great scenes (the one between Annie and Gerry is priceless) mixed in with an ok mystery. Once again, I thought I'd solved it and knew whodunnit and why but noooo. I was wrong. Who could ask for anything more? Oh, and those playlists.
So why only four stars? The Marxist dialectic and all the pseudoinetllectual stuff got a little boring after a while. We got it. These people met or worked at uni. Enough.
