This nonfiction book tells the story of Wilson Bentley, the man who took the first photographs of snow. He also determined that no two snowflakes are the same and studied the water cycle. The book goes through his life, from first becoming enamored with snow, to finding his photography technique, to his eventual death. The book follows his life like a narrative, however their is factual information about him on the side panels of each page.

I found the book to be very sweet. I love that it reads like a story, that makes his life far more easy to read and relate to. The additional information on each page was also very interesting; it included the fun and strange facts, such as how many photos he took in a winter or that everyone still refers to his work when researching snow. Finally the illustrations were woodcut and very detailed; thus explaining its Caldecott award!

The book wold be wonderful for any biography lesson, as well as for introducing a unit on weather, water cycles, or snow specifically. I would definitely recommend it to a student who was interested in snow or weather.

Beautiful illustrations and a unique subject make for a truly lovely picture book biography. I really like biography’s about interesting yet “ordinary” people. Snowflake Bentley’s dedication to his passion and his determination to share something interesting and beautiful with the world is inspiring. My four year old son loved the book as well and found it fascinating. The colored wood carving illustrations are beautiful and add another interesting layer to the story.

This book is one of those books that you wouldn't pick up as book for enterainment, but rather a school requirement because that's what I did. It's a picture book and demands a child's attention, but as I got used to chapter books, this stuff just bores the heck outta me.

"Snowflake Bentley" was just a small book that could be used for teachers to read to their class before they start reading biographies because this is what it is: a mini biography.

This would be a great pick to read to a child as a bed time story because the child will be thinking about snowflakes and that encourages education.

A simple picture book discussing the life of Wilson Bentley, who gave the world the most detailed micro-photographs of snowflakes. A good read for littles.

I really enjoyed this picture book biography for school aged chidren.

I was so reminded of how I was fascinated with snow and snowflakes when I was a kid.

This is a biography of a man who was obsessed with snow from a young age and developed a technique of microphotography so he could capture pictures of individual snowflakes. His interest didn’t lag, even when he was scorned or dismissed for it.

I was emotionally touched by this story. I loved how his parents supported him by buying him the camera that he needed and how other scientists also supported his work. I was struck with his life long passion for nature, especially for snow, and how he lived his passion and was generous with his photographs.

The art really fit the book, although it’s in a style not my favorite. (Edit: After I read the book and realized that these were woodcuts I was impressed and also got more enjoyment from them.) The story was not told in a scintillating manner or style, but if the reader is already interested in the subject, it suffices. I was fascinated. I’m even considering reading [a:W. A. Bentley|199969|W.A. Bentley|http://www.goodreads.com/images/nophoto/nophoto-U-50x66.jpg]'s book [b:Snow Crystals|994292|Snow Crystals (Dover Photography Collections)|W.A. Bentley|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1180062957s/994292.jpg|639481] and especially his book [b:Snowflakes in Photographs|348490|Snowflakes in Photographs|W.A. Bentley|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1173957600s/348490.jpg|338775].

What I was most hoping for was included: the final page contains a photo of Bentley with his camera and shows three of his snowflake photographs. I’d have liked to see even more, but I’m glad that at least three were included.

Grade: read aloud for 1st grade, but probably best for 2-3
Content: Snow, precipitation. Wilson Bentley and his snowflakes.

This is basically a biography about Wilson Bentley. He is a scientist known for studying and photographing snowflakes. This book can be used to talk about Wilson Bentley and snow/snowflakes. It can be used during a lesson about precipitation, possibly even incorporating some math into the lesson when talking about the symmetry of the snowflakes that Wilson Bentley found.

I love the snowflake photographs! I need to do more research into the originals.
