I struggled understanding the different magic systems, but after putting in the time I loved the book. The characters are strong and yet imperfect. They strive to do what is right for the ones they love and conquer their own weaknesses . Magic and dragons with an emphasis on ancestry.

This book was such a creative take on the trope of "young woman chosen by Gods gets powers and saves her kingdom." I loved how this picked up years after the big fight with our two female main characters who are grappling with their identity, future, and place in the kingdom after everything that's happened. This unique plot had lots of action and was a unique twist on many of the typical fantasy plots that get a bit stale after so many books. It kept me on my toes the whole time and even though it's a YA, it's complex and satisfying enough for an adult audience. I appreciated the genuine/authentic representation for young women of color and queer folks and think the author did a beautiful job creating a unique world that was also steeped in Jamaican history and culture. Absolutely obsessed with this book (and the characters). The only downside was that I realized too close to the end that this was a series and not just a one-off ... I am definitely counting down the days until the sequel is released in early 2025!

A really stunning debut novel that centers the complications of sisterhood and colonialism, plus dragons!! What more could you want?!? I've been teasing my friend that I'm going to read the Fourth Wing book just to see what all the hype is about, but she recommended this instead and it was so worth my time. My only wish is that the third act was less rushed, in reading it I felt like it left me with far more questions than answers, even though I know there will be a sequel.

It took a little effort to get into this, but the story started to flow about 25 percent of the way in. I liked the characters quite a bit, especially Ilora. I think the book could have started stronger if it hadn't yada yada-ed the whole war that took place before the book. There was a lot of exposition that could have been more engaging in a show, not tell model.

The cover of this book alone had me. Then all of a sudden goodreads is doing a giveaway and somehow I win a copy making this not only my first read of the year but also my first ARC…Where to begin…So Let Them Burn is full of many things including two of my most favorite things: Black girls and dragons. It’s a complex story with complex characters. Some things are easy to guess and others aren’t. They all make for a wonderful story full of twists and turns that make you think about what you would do to save a loved one. Would you betray your country? The gods? What wouldn’t be off limits??? This book also gives insight into the effects of colonization and how the oppressor doesn’t just leave. They’ll try to keep their claws sunk into their prey as best as they can. San Irie may be a fictional island but it is based off of Jamaica and the lasting effects of colonization in both cases are very real. I would also say that this book shows what happens when children are forced to grow up too quickly while in these situations. They are forced to fight to be free, whether they be chosen ones like Faron or ordinary like Elara, and it has long lasting effects on them.
Both sisters have moments where they are dealing with ptsd from fighting in a war they didn’t want but that they had to fight in in order to gain their freedom and the freedom of their people.
I will definitely be getting another copy but I’m already in love with this story and I cannot wait for book 2 😫.
