Surviving God: A New Vision of God Through the Eyes of Sexual Abuse Survivors by Grace Ji-Sun Kim

Excellent, incredibly timely, and the concept of centering survivors, and their stories, in theology and the activity of the church, is lasting and important. A Surviving God is one less people will have to “survive.”

I like how they dive into parts of the Bible and make us think about what those parts of the Bible really mean. They make the reader question what the moral of the stories are and have us rethink about how much violence, sexual violence, misogyny, and abuse the text portrays and how those in the church (and followers) would use the patriarchal and misogynistic explanations of the Bible to justify sexual violence.
It was interesting to hear about how the crucifixion of Jesus is also a sexually violent crime. I am not a Christian nor have read the Bible, but through my various interaction of the religion and text through college and friends, this notion never came across. It is interesting to dissect in this way and open a conversation on why God, who is said to be all-loving, "allows" this to happen to Jesus and to people.
