Mecha fights with swords. Slow burn sapphics. And found family. All a good mix to make the perfect recipe for a book up on my line. I enjoyed it, even though after waiting so much to read it and hearing such good things about it, my expectations were on the sky and it didn't quite reach them. But that's fine. The book was entertaining and cool, I liked the characters and the plot. We will see if the sequel lives up to the hype of the first one.

SCREAMINGGGGG okay. okay so. i went into this thinking it would be sort of like pacific rim or iron widow but more lesbians, but it's definitely not that. there are mechas and pilots, certainly, and female rage and retribution are a huge part of both gearbreakers and iron widow, but that's the extent of the similarities. i loved the two protagonists, and i loved that romance was less of a focus than the plot, yet the romance that was there made sense. i enjoyed the twist very much, and the cliffhanger actually made me want to read the sequel. so great and so fun.

I've been wanting to read this book for a while and it was pretty great! I liked the concept of what Gearbreakers do and how the resistance is working to take down the mechas. I was intrigued right away at the end of Sona's first chapter when you see her real intention of trying to dismantle and hurt the system from the inside. I listened to this via audiobook and I think that's what made me knock down a star. Both narrarators were great, but they were very similar in style and it took me a long time to differentiate between the two. I also had a really hard time understanding when listening the difference between present time and flashbacks during the first quarter of the book. I struggled a bit with the pacing, feeling like there was a lot of ""and suddenly!"" moments. I do understand that during apocalyptic war survival, there will be a lot of stuff like that happening, but I feel like sometimes it happened so quickly not only to the characters but to the reader as well and I felt confused and would have to rewind to make sure I didn't miss anything. the book ended with an intense cliff hanger that basically requires you to read the next book. I personally don't mind that about books, but I know it's a turn off to others. I hope to check out book 2 in the future!!

The perfect dystopian sci fi setting with badass ginormous death metal robots raging a class war. A beautifully written lesbian relationship that was so delightful. Did the  “enemies to lovers” troupe very well. The complex morals between when violence crosses a line in war.. just *CHEFS KISS* very excited for the second book!!

I usually stay away from YA fiction, but this one's pretty good. Set in a brutal dystopian world, it's a place where the ruling elite hoards resources and suppresses the works with the aid of giant mechas. The mechas are controlled by cybernetically enhanced pilots. One of those pilots is one of the two POV characters, Sona. Originally from the Badlands, she managed to sneak into the pilot program to destroy it from within. She gets help when an infamous Gearbreaker named Eris (the other POV character), the rebel faction that tries to destroy the mechas, gets arrested and is brought back to the capital. Together they flee to join the fight.

The writing was a bit janky at times, especially the beginning was just a bit off. But once Eris shows up, the story gets rolling and the protagonists with their slow burn love story are captivating. As so often in dystopian YA fiction, it's a bit disturbing at times how brutal those teenagers are.

The cliffhanger at the end is a bit rough, how dare the author? It's good I have the sequel queued up on my e-reader.

I enjoyed the story overall, but despite having many elements that look for in a fun queer sci fi, I found it hard to sink into. I stuck it out and definitely enjoyed the two mains growing closer and kicking ass together… but I had forgotten this was a series with, you guessed it, a cliffhanger. I kinda hate that.

♡ Slow Burn
♡ Found Family
♡ Sapphic Sci-fi

Sona and Eris were absolutely iconic and I love them so much.   I enjoyed this book so much.  The found family was everything and the writing in general was really amazing.  Every scene was set perfectly and the atmosphere described so well.

The duel point of view was done so beautifully.  Seeing the differences in personalities between Eris and Sona was kinda hilarious at times.  They had a bit of banter between them which was great and the flirting was lovely too.

Overall, it was so easily to fall into the world of this book, to love the characters and be there cheering them on.
