Not what I thought it was going to be. I prefer reading the series rather than reading essays people have written about the series. I was hoping it was going to more of a back story/information book about the different downworlders and shadowhunter law.

More like 3.5 stars. The majority of the essays was really interesting, especially Michelle Hodkin's essay about Simon. (my love <3)
I started "Shadowhunters & Downworlders" a couple of years ago, but couldn't even finish the first essay - it wasn't my cup of tea at all - and I was afraid that all the other essays would be the same. I'm glad that this wasn't the case and that I've finally finished this book!

I read up quite a bit on this book before diving in as I was a bit confused on what it's exact purpose was. I questioned whether this was a bundle of short fanfiction stories? Maybe some "what if" scenarios, events Cassandra Clare did not have an opportunity to put in her main titles. Or perhaps a collection of deep dived thoughts and perspectives on the shadowhunter world and its characters. While the latter can be said to be the most true, I would not consider this piece of work apart of the shadowhunter world. Yes they talk about the book (somewhat), but for the most part these are essays about the authors main interests or hobbies and how they relate it back to the shadowhunters. This branch away from the actual shadowhunter world on top of not being the most captavating authors left me feeling lack lust by the end. With they're only being two(three technically) authors that truly resignated with me and held to the shadow hunter world I can't give this anything more then a 2 star

“Art is a kind of magic.”
Let me preface by saying this isn’t my kind of book - I almost feel bad leaving a review. I read this book for the sake of reading all the shadowhunter books, not really because it interested me; I’m not an essay kind of guy.
However, there were a few that interested me and really got me thinking about the series. It was also a nice way to recap some key parts of the series as it’s been over a year since I’ve reread them.

As a huge Shadowhunters fan, I found this book really interesting and enjoyable, but if you're just a casual fan, this might not interest you. This brings together a collection of essays written by different YA authors about a range of topics. Most of the essays were definitely more in-depth than I thought they were going to be, and I was pleasantly surprised; they talk about Clare's influences and the impacts of certain themes within her novels. The authors talk about things like Simon's identity as a Jewish vampire, the importance of friendship in TMI, and the history of tattoos, and I enjoyed every single essay. The essays talk a lot about Cassie's influences and lightly analyse her work, and a lot of the topics could easily be expanded upon even more.
This book only covers most of TMI and TID, and I'd be really interested to read an updated version encompassing all of the books that have been released since. Obviously the authors are looking at the books in a very positive light (which is fine by me) and are more of a fun discussion of the books rather than a critical deep dive, but, like I said, I'm a huge fan of Cassie's books so I enjoyed them.

An interesting set of essays on a series that I love.
Most of them were enjoyable to read, but my favorite were the last 2. I loved the conversation between Holly Black, Kelly Link and Cassie Clare. I could listen to them talk about mythology all day. And Sarah Rees Brennan is just ridiculous and hilarous and basically speaking my brain slightly more eloquently than I could have.

Afraid i was expecting more then what i found in this book. It was good but somewhat of a drag to get through. For the most part i stayed interested but found myself skipping parts along the way. Definitely geared more toward an intellectual looking into the series as opposed to a regular fan of the series.
