Sense of Grace is a mystery set in a rural mid-Missouri county. It opens with Sheriff Francis Hood staunching the bleeding on a man passed out in a field where someone has sliced off his ear. When he learns the victim has recently been released from prison after serving 30 years for murdering his wife and two of his three children Sheriff Hood's job becomes quite complicated, especially when the victim of the assault isn't being very helpful, despite repeated attacks on his person.

As the search for the attacker continues, the sheriff is also battling issues at home and work that divide his attention, including struggling for his new sobriety and figuring out what he believes in.

Sense of Grace is a very quick and engaging read.
