I love a title that forces me to stop and contemplate. My mind immediately went to the most challenging section of the Boston Marathon, also called Heartbreak Hill, and I presumed that the story held in my hands featured a defining incident and/or a challenging feature of a relationship between the main characters.
I wasn’t far off.
The same way extreme athletes require mental fortitude to push through the pain and keep going in order to conquer this section of the marathon, so do Grayson and Reid. They embrace a challenge, push through the pain and experience the triumph of conquering. Like the athletes, there is a physical and mental toll at a crucial point; especially when their journey intersects with that of Nadia and Rafe Karlsson. Heartbreak Hill is the most challenging place in any relationship. We’ll all face it at some point. How will we fare?
This book is really about a change of heart.
Grayson Caballero and Reid Sullivan both work at Wold Collective, live in the same apartment complex, are single, and have an obvious attraction to each other, yet Grayson keeps his distance. The thing is, if he waits too long, Reid will become tired waiting. Suddenly, something out of his control happens and it forces them to reconsider…everything.
I appreciated an opportunity to reevaluate and recalibrate. I learned about love in the face of death, about making life-changing decisions, and got a glimpse of the misunderstood and unique journey of grief. I was reminded that every loss is a death of sorts and was left considering where my feelings come from - is it a reaction or is it a stored memory?
This book about love, second chances and loss is one you’ll want on your reading list!

5⭐️ another amazing book by Heidi! Full of love, heartbreak, grief, hope, and second shots at life.
I was waffling between a high four stars and five, mainly because I felt like there was something missing at the end (I can’t pinpoint what I felt was missing, just that something was missing), but ultimately gave it 5⭐️ because I felt ALL the feels with this book. I cried, had to stop reading a couple times, and wasn’t able to pick up a book right away like usually do when finishing a book. I can already tell these characters are going to stick with me.

This was so cute and heartwarming. Grayson receives a heart transplant and after, his entire outlook on life changed. He asked his best friend to marry him as he had been in love with her before but never said anything because of his bad heart. Over the moon happy with his new life, he felt this aching sadness. He started to do some research on who donated the heart. Once he found out, he realized it was his high school sweetheart’s husband. He showed up for a visit and his pain heals once he sees her two children. The children of the heart donor.

"The thought crippled her. Worse now than before. She was scared she wouldn't fit in his life anymore, that there would be no space for her."

There was just something about the premise of Heartbreak Hill that intrigued me, and I couldn't resist adding it to my TBR. I was curious about the heart transplant element and how it would affect both storylines... And it without doubt turned out to be a powerful and moving read. The first part of the title seems to fit the story very well, and definitely make sure to have some tissues at hand before you start reading! Even dear old stone-faced me couldn't keep it dry this time around...
Heartbreak Hill won't be for everyone, and you definitely have to brace yourself for a LOT of focus on grief and loss. While there is hope and romance found along the way, this book is neither essentially happy nor uplifting, so if you are looking for something light to read this is not the book for you. If you don't mind strong emotions and a lot of sadness, Heartbreak Hill will offer you an interesting journey though. The heart transplant/donor element was fascinating, and it was what made this story stand out for me.
The story switches mainly between Nadia and Graydon. Nadia's POV focuses on grief and loss after her husband passed away and she donated his organs; Graydon's POV is all about second chances and embracing a new life after receiving a heart transplant. Together, these POVs offer you a rollercoaster ride full of emotions, although I personally think Nadia's POV is the stronger of the two. Her reactions felt more genuine, and everything she went through after the car accident was heartbreaking. It shows that grief is messy and follows no schedule, and her development was realistically done.
I was less of a fan of Graydon's POV, mostly because his behavior could get pretty frustrating at times. The steamy scenes put a damper on things for me as well, which just didn't seem to fit with the tone of the rest of the story... Then again, it's no secret that I'm never a fan. The romance itself I had mixed thoughts about as well, mostly because it didn't feel 100% genuine and the final solution was just a bit too convenient. The cellular memory element itself was fascinating though.
If you enjoy engaging and highly emotional contemporaries that focus on grief and loss as well as new beginning and second chances, you will most likely have a great time reading Heartbreak Hill. It's not a lighthearted read, but the journey is definitely worth it!
