An intimate history of US-Cuban relations, the good, the bad and the ugly. Hayden interviews one of the top leaders in Cuba to get an inside perspective. It's a pretty hopeful book. Especially after Obama's announcement in December (after which the book was revised hurriedly before publication) of the beginnings of normalization. It is amazing how the Cuban exile community and their right wing supporters have stalled US- Cuban relations for over 50 years. There were some possibilities of closer relations under Carter and Clinton, but this recent announcement is the first real breakthrough than could be lasting. The changes in Latin America as a whole have helped a lot. Cuban is on its own path opening up slowly but steadily. I, for one, am looking forward to going and seeing how OSH is approached in this unique society.
